Cirko: Spherical Space
CIRKO: MIRVA MÄKINEN - SPHERICAL SPACE
20.-28.3.2015, Cirko - Center for new circus, Suvilahti
The central theme of Spherical Space is communication between performers and their relationship with space. The name refers to a three dimensional space in which the performers move. What is the performers’ experience of the space? What is their relation to other people in the space? Often a performer closes her eyes or lets her gaze wander with the movement while she moves rapidly. The speed enables the performer to let go of control, yet still maintain connection to other people in the space.
The performance is part of Mirva Mäkinen’s research for her doctoral dissertation at The Performing Arts Research Centre in the University of the Arts Helsinki. The subject of Mäkinen’s dissertation is contact improvisation. Contact improvisation is a form of dance in which dancers are in touch with each other while they move. In Spherical Space Mäkinen examines the significance of speed in the aesthetics of contact improvisation. The performers are dance students, professional dancers and circus artists.
