Q: Where is Suvilahti and how do you get there?
A: Suvilahti is situated in the Sörnäinen district of Helsinki between the Hanasaari power plant and the Sompasaari harbour and by the intersection of the main roads Sörnäisten rantatie and Itäväylä (see the maps on the Info page).
Q: Is the area open to visitors?
A: Yes, Suvilahti is a public area that can be visited at any time. The area can be accessed from Kaasutehtaankatu street when arriving from the Kalasatama metro station. You can also enter the area from the main road Sörnäisten rantatie.
Q: I’m interested in renting workspace/rehearsal space/performance space at Suvilahti for myself/my group on a long-term basis. Who should I contact?
A: Property Manager Soile Kuusela, soile.kuusela@kaapelitehdas.fi.
Q: How easy or hard is it to rent space at Suvilahti?
A: In 2008 the total amount of floor space requested exceeded the total size of buildings at Suvilahti by a factor of three. As we continue to receive requests, it is simply not possible to offer space to all interested parties.
Q: What kind of renovation work is being done to the area and its buildings?
A: The technical network between all the buildings in the area (HVACA = heating, ventilation, air conditioning and automation) was totally modernised between autumn 2009 and spring 2010. Due to the former gas plant at Suvilahti, the soil also had to be cleaned. Now the buildings will be renovated from the inside one at a time. Finally, the facades of the buildings will be repaired.
Q: Who will pay for all of this?
A: The Premises Centre of the Helsinki City Real Estate Department is responsible for the HVACA renovation and soil cleaning. Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo (Real Estate Company Kaapelitalo) will renovate the buildings and rent out space for cultural and other uses. Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo is self-funded, so the renovations will be covered by income from rents – just like at Kaapelitehdas (the Cable Factory).
Q: I am looking for space for my event and would like to rent the former power plant hall. Who do I turn to?
