Soil remediation work is being carried out on the grounds of the former gas works. At the same time the technical network is also being modernised.

The work began on 1 September 2009. It’s expected to last for approximately 10 months.

The Suvilahti gas works were operational from 1910 to 1973 and used coal as the raw material. The hazardous byproducts that were created from the production of gas included coal tar, PAH compounds, oil hydrocarbons and cyanide. As a result, the soil in the area was contaminated. The soil is now being cleaned, and the underground technical network in the area is being modernised at the same time. The current technical network is obsolete and insufficient for the intended use of the area.

The grounds and buildings at Suvilahti are administered by the property management company Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo. If the soil remediation work is completed on time, the popular graffiti wall will reopen at the start of next summer. It will also be possible to organise rock festivals and other events in Energiakenttä (energy field).

All other activities in the area, including the rental of facilities and events at Kattilahalli, the former boiler hall, will continue for the most part unaffected by the renovation work. The former machine room Kojehuone (machine room) will also be fully renovated over the next year for its future tenant the Cirko Centre for New Circus.
